A member of the Saxifragaceae family, the blackcurrant bush, just as the red currant bush, belongs to the Ribes botanical genus. It produces a fruit rich in vitamin C.

The blackcurrant bush

The blackcurrant bush, unlike the red current bush, produces its fruit on new, not old shoots, and produces dark purple, almost black berries.

The berries, like the leaves and shoots, give off a strong, distinctive smell.

The blackcurrant bush produces the sweetest berries in a continental climate with hot summers.

The fruit

In France, blackcurrants are widely farmed. The main areas of production are the Loire Valley, the Rhone Valley, Burgundy and the Paris Basin.
Different varieties are cultivated and major research work has made it possible to improve the characteristics of these varieties.
The “Noir de Bourgogne”, whose farming has widely developed in the different production regions, is the strongest and best quality variety. It gives the best products after maceration.

Each year Cherry Rocher prepares its products with several hundred tonnes of blackcurrants, in particular the "Noir de Bourgogne" variety.
