The bilberry, known also as whortleberry or blueberry, the fruit of Vaccinium myrtillus, or the true bilberry bush, is a member of the Ericaceae family.
This fruit provides a little vitamin C and B.



The bilberry bush

Vaccinium myrtillus grows in Europe.
Vaccinium corymbosum or giant bilberry bush, originated in North America. Vaccinium ovatum comes from Canada.

The fruit

For a long time, the bilberry was used for its medicinal properties.
It was used to treat intestinal disorders, such as dysentery.
It is also known to reduce the level of urea in the blood and to improve vision.
A traditional fruit in America, the bilberry was highly appreciated by the American Indians who consumed the different varieties.
